Spring (Sturgeon) Break 2009
March 19th, 2009We hadn't discussed the options, but in the past we have done some camping, atving, visited friends in the Kootenays, or best of all taken a trip to Disneyland!
When I told the kids we weren't going away this away time, I started naming off things we could do for fun close to home.We could go hiking, visit the aquarium, ride our quads ect. But they were both very set on doing some fishing! Now, we have fished a bit in the past but according to them it was time to stop fooling around and get serious about it! Maybe I have helped to much or whatever but they wanted to get more hands on and see what I am always fussing about.
For those of you that don't live in the Fraser Valley, you have to understand that this has been the worst weather on Spring Break we have ever had. It has been windy, wet, and cold. We have had hail, snow, and rain almost every day,
so getting out on the water has been a tough sell on Dad, but not the kids!! They are too smart, when I try to say its too cold
they remind me that the boats are covered and heated! So why not? We really are blessed with all of the fishing opportunity
we have in the Fraser Valley.
We start by learning the different baits, and how to prepare them. A little harder for the girls than the boys it seems!

It doesn't take long before we are into not 1 fish, but 2! A double header!

After looking at these pics, I notice the same technique by father and son!

Dad gets a nice fish pushing the 7' mark to the side of the boat!

A quick pic, and away he goes so we can deal with Sage's "monster"
One of his biggest to date, and all by himself from hook set to landing!

Then it was Emma's turn. Emma still needs a little assistance from her brother and the Folbe rod holders!!
That a girl, keep crankin'!!

WOW! bigger than I thought!

We spent a lot of time discussing the tagging program, and the importance of understanding and protecting sturgeon.

We had a great assembly line going, each with a certain task so we could process the fish quickly and accurately.
4' fish for a 4' kid! pretty cool.

We tried several spots, and they all seemed to produce.

All in all we have had a great couple days of fishing, and if the weather holds we intend to do a few more. I try to think back to my Spring Breaks as a kid and some of the times I remember most involved fishing!
If you get a chance, take your kids out for a day. There are no licences required under the age of 16 and we have a variety of fisheries to try right now like trout, kokanee, all kinds of course fish and of course sturgeon.
If you are interested in getting the family out for a day of sturgeon fishing, give us a call and we will start up the heaters and begin making some bait!Steelhead Fishing in the Snow....

A Day of Cutthroat Fishing
March 6th, 2009Spent the day searching for Cutthroat trout on the Fraser River.

A peacefull day shared with Bald Eagles, Mink, and this guy! Mr. Racoon.

There are plenty of Salmon Fry starting to migrate out to the ocean, and the ducks, gulls, and fish are starting to hunt for them, so I was in good company.

The obvious fly to start with had to be a minnow pattern, so on went the Muddler minnow.

And Voila!! A beautiful 14" cutthroat.

The Whitefish were even keying in on the salmon fry.

Next up, my epoxy alvin.

With several smaller cutthroat in the 8" to 12" range gobbling them up.

Figured I had better step up the size of fly and see if there were any bigger fish around?

There seemed to be!

The water is so low and clear on the Fraser right now, I tried a few under water shots as well.

Still hadn't found the "big" one yet, so I pulled out the "big" fish fly and...

Got this guy! Largest fish of the day, a nice male around 16" long.

Another long slender silver bullet on a tied down minnow pattern.

A great day all said and done! Now is the time for hunting Cutthroat trout as they begin to key in on the Salmon fry migration, before long there will be lots of food around and they can become more picky. It was interesting though, at the end of the day I made one last stop and saw several fish sipping midges and the few Mayflies that were hatching. I tried a dry for the remainder of the run, but they were too interested in the real thing to bother with what I had to offer, so left them to eat in peace!

"Anything is Possible"- Rick Hansen
March 4th, 2009

I grabbed a copy of "Great White Fish: A Sturgeon Story" at a Fraser River Sturgeon Conservation Society Event on Sunday night, (it was for my nephews Pre-School class). Rick Hansen (Man in Motion & FRSCS Chair) happened to be at the meeting so I asked him to sign the book. I didn't know the name of the pre-school teacher, so I asked him to just sign it in some generic manner. Rick chose to write, "anything is possible". I contemplated this for a brief second, said my Thanks and went on my way.
Fast Forward to Monday morning- Rick Hansen, Fred Helmer, Tony Nootebos, Jim Rissling, Carl English, and Troy Nelson.
8:15am, Misson Boat Launch
8:16 am, Fish on...
8:29am, Fish on...
8:40am, Fish on...
8:51am Fish on...
8:59 am fish on...
Now this trend continued all day, multiple fish, and 6 very, very tired Anglers. One very well used sturgeon sling, loads of newly tagged sturgeon- Big & Small- 7 foot 4 to 12 inches.
Back to what Rick was saying "Anything is possible", it was record setting day, not only in the sense that the Gents all caught more fish than they had ever caught in one day EVER Recapture rate- 25%!!!!
